Himalayan Salt lamps are one of my favorite centerpieces in the bedroom. With it’s soft, warm glow, it can transform your entire mood and make your feel so comfortable. I often like falling asleep to the lamps soothing glow, but is that safe? It’s a question I have often asked myself so I endeavoured to find out: are Himalayan Salt lamps a fire hazard?
Salt lamps are generally very safe and are not a fire hazard. While there was a case in 2017 where several salt lamps were recalled due to a safety issue, this was a one-off problem.
Are Himalayan Salt Lamps a Fire Hazard?
Are salt lamps a fire hazard? As with many imported electrical products, we always have to watch out for faulty wiring. The standards in the USA are very high, and the authorities are quick to recall products that don’t measure up. In 2017 a home decor store issued a recall of around 80,000 lamps due to safety concerns the dimmer switch and outlet plug were overheating. This created a fire hazard and because a timely recall was issued no one was hurt. I want to stress that the lamps are perfectly safe, and in this case, it was just the associated electricals that were unsafe.
Probably it is best to avoid the cheap, pink, rocks salt brands that may cut corners. A well-made salt lamp should last for many years.
Can you Leave a Himalayan Salt Lamp on Overnight?
Yes, if you position your lamp safely where it can’t be knocked over, it is safe to leave it on. There are many different Himalayan salt lamps, and you could really put a medium-sized lamp in every room. They are hand-carved from ancient Himalayan crystal salt and contain a low watt bulb that heats up the salt lamp. The bulb in the salt lamp does not generate enough heat to burn the salt rock or wooden base. You are perfectly safe to leave your lamp on all night.
Can Himalayan Salt Lamps Overheat.
As long as you are in the house it is perfectly safe to leave the light on, your low watt bulb will not cause overheating problems. In fact, there are many benefits to leaving your Himalayan salt lamp on overnight, and some of them are.
- sleep better at night
- wake up more refreshed
- reduced headaches
- higher levels of relaxation
- less breathing difficulties
In fact, are salt lamps a fire hazard, is not relevant when you sift through all the research, and because they gently heat the salt crystal with a very low-powered bulb the heated salt releases clean vapor back into the air. The lamps are designed to be left on all the time, except when leaving the house.
Are Himalayan Salt Lamps Safe to Touch
The lamp is only ever warm to the touch, so if your lamp is too hot you may have the wrong size globe in it. Your lamp will emit a soft warm light and give your room a lovely amber glow. If you put your hand out in the night and touch it you won’t find that it is any warmer and it certainly will not burn you. The reason it is recommended to leave your lamp on is to avoid corrosion if you turn it off and the water drips down onto any metal surface there is a risk of corrosion due to the chemical reaction between saltwater and metal.
Can Himalayan Salt Lamps Melt?
The lamps are carefully crafted with a well-built base, and no they won’t melt because the bulb is low wattage and does not generate enough heat.
Unfortunately, there are some imitation salt lamps on the market so always buy a high-quality lamp and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Place your lamp out of the reach of pets and small children, as you don’t want anyone to lick it, salt is dangerous especially to cats.
6.Do Salt lamps Deteriorate?
If you take good care of your salt lamp it will last indefinitely. If you live in a humid climate they do tend to sweat. If anyone in your house smokes it is a good idea to have a salt lamp in every room that they use to clean the air. Put the lamp on a coffee table and leave it on most of the time to take the impurities out of the air. As with most electrical products. you will eventually need to purchase a new one, but not for many years, and when you do it will probably be because the electrical components are wearing and not the salt lamp.
Is a Salt Lamp Safe in a Child’s Bedroom?
Yes, just be sure that the child can’t knock it over. If you have a child who is frightened of the dark and requires a night light, a salt lamp throws a lovely mellow glow and won’t disturb the child’s sleep. The salt lamp will provide other benefits for the child and they include respiratory benefits. When you have the lamp on it ignites minerals found in the salt and gives off negative ions, this acts to purify the air in the room as salt is a natural ionizer, so that makes sense. Other Benefits for children are:
- Ease coughing when the child has a cold.
- Reduces allergy symptoms.
- Improves concentration
- Promotes a restful sleep
- Deodorizes the air.
- Safe light source.
I can see many benefits in having several lovely Himalayan Salt lamps in the house. Just the feeling of better air quality, well-being, and tranquility is enough to encourage us to go and buy another one to put in the bedroom to get a better night’s sleep while removing negative allergens and pollens from the air and allowing us to breathe more freely.
